Waymo CEO John Krafcik said last week that the new company is not interested in “building a better car†and their goal is to “build a better driverâ€. This is why Waymo is willing to team up with FCA, which is different from Ford and GM, which have not involved the development of autonomous vehicles.
“With these new self-driving minivans, we can find real-world feelings about the technology of autonomous driving of different ages, different sizes and different numbers of passengers in the test,†Krafusik said in a statement. Previously, Waymo had a number of Pacifica autopilot prototypes, but the 100 new cars were much better at completion.
An FCA spokesperson said: "The engineers of the two companies worked together to complete the integration of the vehicle electronics and control system with the autopilot system in just six months."
In order to use Waymo's autonomous driving technology, the two companies modified the electronics, power, chassis and frame of the production Pacifica minivan. The Pacifica prototype was also initially tested in Michigan, Arizona and California. The car even completed a 200-hour extreme weather test.
During the development process, Waymo also learned a lot of first-hand experience, such as how to ensure the ride experience of self-driving vehicles by adjusting the vehicle counterweight.
According to Bloomberg, in addition to the 100 test cars, Waymo and FCA are also preparing to launch autonomous vehicle sharing services by the end of 2017.
