NXP Semiconductors Introduces the Most High Performance Product of the Layerscape Series - LX2160A SoC

NXP Semiconductors NV has introduced the LX2160A SoC, the highest performance product in the Layerscape family. The LX2160A is designed for challenging high-performance network applications, network edge computing and data center offload. In order to be able to perform virtualized cloud workloads credibly and securely at the edge of the network, new distributed computing models are emerging.

NXP Semiconductors Introduces the Most High Performance Product of the Layerscape Series - LX2160A SoC

With 16 high-performance ARM Cortex-A72 cores, the LX2160A operates at over 2 GHz and consumes less than 30 W. It supports both 100 Gbps Ethernet interfaces and 4th generation PCIe high-speed interconnect standards. In addition, the LX2160A processor also supports wire-speed Layer 2 switching capability with a data compression acceleration engine and a 50 Gbps IPSec data encryption acceleration engine. NXP's Layerscape processor family includes a single-core processor that consumes less than 1 W to the 16-core LX2160A, and is the most comprehensive 64-bit ARM processor family available today.

Tarek Bustami, senior vice president and general manager of product division at NXP Semiconductors, said: "Edge processing will drive the next phase of network, computing and IoT infrastructure growth. After the workload moves from the cloud to the edge, latency will decrease. Increased security and increased resilience. The LX2160A's integrated performance and bandwidth provide an ideal platform for a variety of network, data analysis and data processing workloads."

Bob Wheeler, principal analyst at Linley Group, said: "Many network service providers, cloud companies and industrial IoT companies are currently developing edge computing. One of the great advantages of this technology is that it can reduce the latency of cloud computing services and improve privacy protection. Strength and reduced WAN bandwidth. NXP's Layerscape LX2160A processor integrates 16 core and 100 Gbps Ethernet interfaces to help the ARM ecosystem meet the needs of high-performance edge computing applications."

Based on open source projects such as Open Daylight, OpenStack and OP-NFV that support cloud and network function virtualization, NXP supports and promotes a rich ARM virtualization ecosystem. NXP's ARM processors include hardware that supports virtualization technologies such as KVM and Linux containers, as well as hardware acceleration engines for network virtualization acceleration. NXP also supports industry-standard virtualization APIs such as DPDK, OVS, and VirTIo, as well as enterprise-standard Linux distributions of Debian and Ubuntu.
