Introduction to TSN Technology and Car Ethernet

TSN technology has been used for a long time and may be unfamiliar to the automotive industry. It is a technology that extends from the video and audio data domain to the automotive field and further promotes it to the industrial field. TSN originated from the application requirements of the Internet in the video domain. At that time, the technology was called AVB. High-definition data required high bandwidth and maximum real-time. With AVB, it could better transmit high-quality audio and video. For the ADAS, the traditional CAN bus is far from enough. The extremely low-latency high-bandwidth Ethernet transmission technology emerges as the TSN.

Time-Sensitive Networking is a series of standard protocols developed by the TSN Working Group in the IEEE 802.1 Working Group. The team was established in November 2012 and was renamed by the former AVB working group. As we all know, IEEE802.3 is a standard that focuses on Ethernet PHYs and MACs, and IEEE802.1 is focused on Bridging standards. With AVB, the IEEE has brought Ethernet into real-time applications. Through TSN and IEEE, it has enabled Ethernet to enter the industrial and automotive fields and improved the robustness of Ethernet.

The demand for automotive Ethernet in the ADAS area is increasing rapidly, and the high latency and uncertainty of traditional Ethernet networks cannot be tolerated by the automotive industry; therefore, this move of the IEEE not only perfectly integrates the industry of hard real-time application scenarios into the market of its chips. Among them, if the application effect is better, the complex bus types such as CAN, LIN, Flexray, and MOST will be swept out of the automotive industry. In the follow-up, the author will elaborate on the currently published TSN protocol in 802.1.

At present, some companies have already conducted the development and testing of TSN equipment, and they also have corresponding chip support as the switch of the TSN system. For example, TSN systems has TSN box and TSN tool for testing, and can help OEMs develop; intrepidcs also has boxes for talkers and listeners.
