A research team from Morse of the United States has invented a type of drone that can “disappearâ€. It can dissolve itself after completing transportation or investigation tasks.
This drone project, known as ICARUS, was launched by the US Department of Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in 2015 and has now been successful. According to an announcement by DARPA, the drone is a single-purpose unpowered small transport aircraft that can be delivered from an aircraft and it will gradually disappear after landing.
According to a report by the People's Daily, the drone of the ICARUS project is made of materials that can be deagglomerated or dissolved and will dissolve and disappear when exposed to heat and sunlight. The drone will be made of lightweight film and will be equipped with a guidance system that is smaller than tennis.
Once its mission is completed, it will dissolve into a clear liquid and only the electronics and the items it transports will remain. According to Andreas Kellas, CEO of Morse, “Developing a drone that meets the accuracy and range requirements of DARPA is inherently challenging. It also increases the need to eliminate it, which means that it is almost impossible to accomplish.â€
According to a report by the Volkswagen Machinery News, the Morse Company won a contract of 8 million U.S. dollars for the ICARUS project in 2016. It has now been confirmed that the UAV they developed can not only reach the 100-mile flight range, but also be able to land within 30 feet of the target.
DARPA initially stated in its announcement that drones were developed that, under certain circumstances, such drones would be very useful, for example, medical assistance or disaster areas where blood was transported. The ICARUS project may also be used for supply, so there is no need to worry about retrieving drones in areas that are already difficult to reach. Its investigative capabilities have also given the military some interest.
At present, other details of this drone have not been announced, such as its true size, the weight of the carrying load, and the chemical composition of the dissolvable material. In addition, it has not been published whether this material will have an impact on the environment after dissolution.
