AR virtual limbs can reduce "phantom limb pain" by 50%

Recently, Max OrTIz Catalan, a researcher at Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden, released a report on AR that can help alleviate the pain of amputated patients. The results show that AR virtual limb treatment has obvious effects of “phantom limb pain”. .

Up to 80% of amputated patients are often plagued by a special problem, that is, they have already cut off the limbs that no longer exist, but they feel pain, called Phantom limb pain, because the limb itself is It is gone, but the sensory location corresponding to the nerve and the brain still exists, so this particular problem arises. Catalan wants to create virtual limbs through augmented reality (AR), helping patients reset their brains and relieve phantom limb pain.

Catalan uses the myoelectric sensors used in the Myo gesture-operated wristband to detect the muscle potential on the residual limb, thereby determining what action the patient wants to amputate and then on the screen. On the image of the patient's body, augmented reality synthesizes a virtual limb, the virtual limb will make the action the patient wants to do, and the patient looks at the screen as if looking at the mirror, but the limb in the mirror has the limb that has been cut off. It can also behave as you like, so it is more realistic than just looking at the contralateral limbs in the mirror.

Catalan was tested on 14 of the most severely refractory patients with chronic phantom limb pain. These patients experienced an average of 10 years of chronic phantom pain. Four of them had medications and others did not receive any other treatment. Because all previous treatments were ineffective, the treatment lasted for 6 weeks and more than 12 times. The initial results were very encouraging. In the last treatment, the patient's return pain was reduced by 50%, and the frequency of pain episodes in daily life was also reduced by half. Two of the four patients who took the drug were given a reduced dose, with a reduction of 33% and a reduction of 81%.

The research team will expand the clinical trials, involving a total of more than 30 patients from different countries, this time will include leg amputation patients, and the control group, the control group is treated with general electrical stimulation therapy, Katalan also said this time Clinical trials will provide more treatments to see if it can make the phantom limb pain completely disappear.

If all goes well, it will be a great gospel for amputated patients, and it will become an important application for augmented reality to enter the medical field.
