At the 2015 World Mobile Communications Conference (MWC), you can see many smart watches in the exhibition hall. Of course, the date of the 2015 MWC conference is quite special. In the fall of the previous year, Apple released a smart watch, which will be officially launched in the spring. Therefore, many manufacturers have demonstrated their wrist wearable technology at this conference, for fear of being grabbed by Apple.
But this year's scene is completely different. At the 2016 MWC conference, almost no heavyweight manufacturers released smart watches. Instead, vendors focus on virtual reality (VR) and the Internet of Things. This anomaly is surprising because on the eve of the MWC conference, many reports said that wearable products will become a hot spot this year.
Is it the death of the smart watch revolution? The answer given by Patrick Moorhead, principal analyst of research firm Moor Insights & Strategy, is no. He believes that the development of smart watches is only temporarily pressing the "pause" button, and manufacturers are waiting for later this year. Several industry innovations.
Moorehead said: "At this year's MWC conference, manufacturers did not show too many wearable products, but this is not the same as the consumer's interest."
IDC's data also validates Moore's statement. Last year, global wearable device shipments were 78.1 million units, an increase of 171.6% year-on-year.
IDC wearable analyst Ramon Llama said: "Wearable products are not exclusive to technology enthusiasts and early adopters, and are popular in the mass market. Because wearables have not yet fully penetrated the mass market, The growth potential is huge."
It is undeniable that at this year's MWC conference, there are indeed a few manufacturers that have displayed their own smart watches, but major manufacturers such as Samsung have not mentioned anything, and HTC has postponed the launch date of new watches.
For the temporary cooling of smart watches, analysts believe that smart watch manufacturers are waiting for the Android Wear upgrade later this year. Android Wear is Google’s operating system for smartwatch development, and it is expected that Google will make a major upgrade to Android Wear at the I/O Developers Conference in May this year.
Later this month, Apple is also expected to launch a new generation of smart watches. The upgrade of the new generation of Apple Watch and Android Wear is expected to rekindle the interest of device manufacturers in smart watches.
In addition, the birth of a new generation of microchips, batteries and sensors will also spawn a new generation of smart watches. Boris Brault, founder and CEO of Swiss smart watch startup MyKronoz, said: "Many people are hesitant about smart watches because of energy consumption."
Research firm GfK expects smartwatches to account for 52% of the wearables market in the next two years, compared to 31% today. According to GfK data, the number of smart watches shipped in 2015 was 19 million, and this year will increase by 85%. In 2017, it will reach 75 million, and in 2018 it will reach 141 million.
