According to Synergy Research's third quarter 2016 survey, Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the giant of the public cloud market, controlling 45% of the global infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) market. In this way, AWS is the leader in the well-deserved cloud computing market.
But a recent report from TBR analysts said that if you think AWS is the leader in cloud computing, then you are wrong. If we continue to judge the leadership of the cloud computing market through the narrow definition of public cloud IaaS, AWS does not need to worry too much about leadership in the short term. However, cloud computing is actually far broader than IaaS, such as SaaS, hosted private cloud, internal private cloud, and cloud professional services, which are AWS-free, which represents a new opportunity for other cloud computing companies.
In fact, when considering the entire cloud computing market (including IaaS, SaaS, all areas of private cloud, professional services around user cloud services), the market leader before 2015 is Salesforce, and after 2015 is Microsoft.
Microsoft is expected to stay ahead of the largest overall cloud computing provider in 2017. Office 365 growth is Microsoft's largest cloud revenue contributor. According to TBR's forecast, 2016 SaaS revenue is nearly $8 billion, Microsoft is at Azure IaaS. And the field of PaaS is growing rapidly.
Opportunities for other cloud computing companies
Oracle leverages Salesforce, target $10 billion in SaaS and PaaS
In 2015, Oracle acquired the cloud computing company Saleforce for $46 billion. Oracle CEO Larry Ellison predicted that Oracle will be the first company to reach $10 billion in SaaS and PaaS.
According to TBR's forecast, Oracle generated only $4.5 billion in SaaS and PaaS revenue in 2017, including NetSuite's revenue. Salesforce is expected to reach $10.6 billion in 2018, and Oracle is expected to have $5.4 billion in profits (including NetSuite).
Google Cloud knocks on the door of the Asian market
Google's strong competitor, Google, is entering the cloud computing market in Southeast Asia. It is expected to build nine new data centers by 2017, four of which are in the Asia Pacific region (including Singapore). Google Cloud Director Apac Rick Harshman said that Asian companies are developing cloud computing. He said at a media briefing in Singapore in October: "10 years ago, the focus was on personal productivity. In the next five years, companies will transform through intelligent data, analytics, machine learning and digital communications."
As all analysts predict, demand for ASEAN cloud computing services is rising. Nikhil Batra, senior research manager at IDC Apac Telecom, said that by 2017, Singapore's cloud computing market will reach $1 billion.
Arun Sundar, chairman of the emerging technology working group of the Asian Cloud CompuTIng AssociaTIon, said that with the arrival of the Asian cloud era, Google Cloud has ushered in new opportunities. “Asia’s market potential is being tapped, which is a good time for Google Cloud to enter the Asian market.â€
