Microsoft is involved in the smart home field, wanting to borrow Insteon

Recently, the author has seen such a message: Insteon's smart products from home automation technology company will be put on the Microsoft Store, and consumers can purchase the company's products through online stores or offline stores.

Before discussing this, we moved the time a little further. In the past two years, Microsoft's "smart home system" has occasionally been mentioned by the media, they hope to "turn the network device into peripheral devices through the abstract interface of the system, and allow users to use the program to start multi-device tasks for the user's The home environment provides a management interface."

Does recent move suggest that Microsoft wants to take another step in the smart home space? We know that Microsoft has always wanted to make the Xbox an entertainment control center for smart homes, so in the past two years they have begun to add other content, such as video. However, what I want to raise here is that entertainment alone is obviously not enough to support Microsoft's smart home dream, and Xbox is not the leader in the "Entertainment Control Center". In other words, Microsoft will inevitably need third-party hardware developers to support their "smart home system" dream.

But from the current situation, smart home entrepreneurs seem to be less willing to play with Microsoft. Ordinary hardware startups because of limited resources, they will give priority to access iOS, Android ecosystem, to provide their own services for mainstream mobile phone users. A smart home entrepreneur even told the author that “there is no market for (WP), and our judgment WP will die out and don’t want to waste energy.”

Even a relatively large-scale smart home manufacturer does not have much hope for Microsoft's ecology. The Nest, which was acquired by $3.2 billion, is ostensibly compatible with the three major mobile platforms, but its WP version has been in the 1.0 version for almost a year, and the iOS version has been updated to 4.1. In other words, Nest does not necessarily want to provide its own services for the Microsoft Ecology, more is just to insert a flag.

Because the turn is too slow, Microsoft has clearly lagged behind Apple and Google in the mobile era, regardless of the name of its mobile phone and tablet, sales are very limited. As a partner of the Wintel Alliance, Intel is trying to find opportunities for the Internet of Things. If Microsoft is not willing to let go of its position as a "big boss", it will be a problem sooner or later. A direct approach is to use a resource to support a smart home startup. If they can succeed, it will help Microsoft to move forward.

So, Microsoft will be particularly cautious when it comes to choosing supporters. This can be inferred from the media's introduction to Insteon: "Insteon's product line in California includes a variety of sensors, switches, cameras and homes for monitoring and automation. Other equipment managed by the device, its network radio frequency and existing power line interface are integrated, and provide fast, reliable and dual-frequency connection." In addition to its own products, Insteon can also control third-party equipment, including the famous Nest thermostat.

The conditions for the exchange are also very obvious, Insteon must launch exclusive features for Microsoft's ecological priority, such as the complete Live TIle integration feature, providing a variety of home device status updates when the Windows 8.1 device opens the screen. Although I don't know what effect this collaboration will ultimately have, Microsoft has used this move to show its potential bottom line to potential smart home entrepreneurs – at least for their existing app ecosystem.

In fact, this cooperation is a very crucial battle for Microsoft, because it has already been said that entrepreneurs in the smart home field are already in a semi-abandonment of Microsoft's ecology, unless they suddenly kill a "golden and silver-filled pot". Cheng Jinjin, it is possible to make others look at each other.

But to be honest, can Microsoft's plan succeed?
