When you choose an input filter capacitor for a low-power, off-line power supply, an interesting trade-off occurs. You need to compromise the ripple current rating of the capacitor to suit the voltage range required for the power supply to operate. By increasing the input capacitance, you can get more ripple current while reducing the operating input voltage range of the power supply by reducing the voltage drop across the input capacitor. This will affect the transformer turns ratio of the power supply as well as various voltage and current stresses. The larger the capacitor ripple current rating, the lower the stress and the higher the power supply efficiency.
