Application of mobile WiMAX technology in 4G cellular technology

Several WiMAX products currently available include notebook computers, mobile phones, mini laptops, UMPC and MID.

The mobile WiMAX module must contain WiMAX baseband PHY components, media access control (MAC) chips, radio frequency components, and power amplifiers.

The earliest mobile WiMAX user products were USB adapters and PC cards, mainly for notebook computers. In large cities and urban areas, these products work well with the first-generation WiMAX base stations. Mobile users in these areas hope to have a wider access method than Wi-Fi hotspots.

Since the launch of the first generation of USB adapters and PC card products, the focus of products in the mobile wireless market has begun to shift to mobile phones and other devices smaller than notebook computers. Although there are no standard definitions for various mobile phones, several terms have been accepted by the industry, namely smart phones and VoIP phones.

In addition to basic mobile phone functions, smartphones also support e-mail and Internet access. Through the integration of multi-mode functions-3G and WiMAX-along with the increasing popularity of WiMAX networks, these mobile phones can provide users with seamless voice and data services.

The other extreme is a low-cost VoIP mobile phone. Traditional voice communication is the main application of this mobile phone. WiMAX is just an optional wireless technology for WAN connections. In some cases, these phones may contain some other basic functions, such as text messages and very simple data transfer.

The main market for VoIP mobile phones is some emerging countries and regions, where the wired infrastructure is relatively weak. Most people need voice services before they need other applications. The mini laptop is a small laptop with a 7-inch to 10-inch LCD screen that provides mobile Internet and e-mail access. A typical mini laptop uses the Windows or Linux operating system and supports application software similar to a laptop, but with a lower performance level.

Wi-Fi and other connection technologies are now standard equipment, and future mini notebooks will also increase WiMAX. UMPC is a mini tablet computer developed by Microsoft and Intel, with a 4-inch to 8-inch touch screen. Most UMPCs run the Windows XP Tablet operating system, and the price is less than $ 1,000. UMPC is commonly found in vertical professional markets, such as the medical and catering industries. MID is the earliest small portable device introduced by Intel, which is slightly larger than a smart phone, but smaller than a mini laptop or UMPC.

The purpose of MID is to provide the best mobile platform, not only to achieve Internet access and e-mail access, but also to support multimedia applications. Although it is very attractive from a technical point of view, it remains to be seen whether consumers are willing to carry a third device after carrying smartphones and laptops.

As consumers expect mobile products to provide a wide range of functions, wireless cell phone designs are becoming more and more complex. The device must support many wireless options, such as Bluetooth for connecting to headphones, Wi-Fi for connecting to homes or wireless hotspots, and WAN connections such as 3G for connecting to mobile networks. At the same time, consumers want longer battery life without adding weight or volume. Since WiMAX is the first 4G technology on the market, mobile phone manufacturers are actively adding this new feature.

Choose the right WiMAX module

One way to ensure that mobile products provide maximum functionality is to leave room for wireless modules that meet market requirements. By designing the device as a module, mobile device vendors can support a wide range of wireless technologies. Today, a stand-alone module with a size of approximately 20mmx20mm can support all the requirements of mobile WiMAX certification and can be added to new products.
