Uber is testing a signal light called Beacons that can be directly attached to the windshield of a car and changed color to let the passenger know which car is coming to pick it up.
For Uber passengers, it is not easy to find out which car is picking up on the huge traffic on the road, especially at night. Uber hopes this new feature will solve this problem.
Passengers can choose their own color on their smartphone, and Beacons will adjust accordingly.
Uber said the feature will initially be tested in four cities, Newcastle, Miami, Denver and Nashville, and will be available in more cities next year. The company will issue Beacons signal lights to drivers at relevant events this month to prepare for the New Year's Eve order peak.
The company also said that they will display the color of the Uber car in the app, making it easier for users to identify their car.
Prior to this, when the driver approached himself, the user could only see the model, the license plate number and a small photo. But Uber said the app will include clear photos of the car in the future, and the virtual car on the screen will be the same as the actual color of the car.
This is not the first time Uber has tested a signal light in a car. The company had piloted Spot color-changing lights in 2015, but it was only tested in a city in Seattle.
Uber's biggest competitor in the US, Lyft, recently announced that it will begin to equip its cars with color-changing lights in January next year, almost exactly the same as Uber's Beacons, except that Lyft's signal is called Amps.
Uber has provided bright blue Uber logo lights for new drivers, which can also be attached to the windshield for passenger identification. For example, Uber told BI that the company issued a small number of such sign lights to drivers in Manchester in 2014. But a competitor protested this, and Uber later abandoned the model.
After Uber gave up the blue marker light, there was a black market for Uber logo lights around the world: drivers would buy and sell Uber official logo lights or homemade logo lights.
