Liu Jian, deputy director of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economics and Information Technology, revealed at a press conference held in Shanghai on the afternoon of the 6th that Shanghai is speeding up the formulation and revision of standards for retrofitting existing residential fiber-to-the-home systems, and is expected to be officially released in the near future.

Liu Jian stated that at the same time as the construction of optical fiber broadband networks, standards for residential communications facilities focusing on optical fiber technologies have been established. The standards for supporting communication in newly-built residential communities were officially released after being revised last year. Now the communications facilities for new buildings, especially fiber-to-the-home, are implemented in full compliance with the new standards.

He said that fiber-optic technology requires photoelectric conversion when entering the home, and the original home wiring box did not meet this requirement, resulting in no way to achieve it. The newly built community should fully consider the requirements of optical fiber. To this end, Shanghai will soon announce the standards for the transformation of existing residential fiber-to-the-home systems.

It is reported that Shanghai's urban fiber-optic broadband network coverage and the number of actual users in the country's leading, ranking first in the country. Shanghai Optical Fiber Broadband Network now covers 6.5 million and the actual number of users exceeds 2 million.

Liu Jian also said that Shanghai is accelerating the revision of standards for communication facilities for commercial buildings and other public buildings and will complete the revision within the year. This is also the first in the country.
