A few days ago, the Long Island Cemetery applied for the construction of a 9MW photovoltaic power station on its land.
The project is located in St. John's Cemetery in West Babylon, New York State and will be the second largest in the state. The town council meeting on May 19 will determine its fate.
Randy Van Yahres, director of planning and development of the non-profit organization that manages the site, said in an interview with Newsday: “We need to guarantee the privacy of people who participated in the inspection process. There is no noise. It is not concerned with the public.â€
Yahres stated that there are currently only 18 tombs in the 46-hectare site and that it is impossible to fill two adjacent cemeteries under the same management for the next 120 years. The location of the power station will block the location of the existing graves.
If approved, SolarLiberty will develop the site and pay rent to the cemetery.
Robert Fells, executive director of the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association, said in an interview with Newsday: “For maintenance purposes, graveyards are the only businesses that will always serve their items and keep the grave, which requires constant income. If you can generate some income to help its purpose without any loss of the quality and dignity of the cemetery, why not?â€
The largest PV project in New York State is the 32MW project in Brookhaven.
