This development kit uses the industry-leading Nordic nRF52832 low-power Bluetooth system-on-chip (SoC) as the master chip, integrating nine sensors plus microphones and speakers, allowing application developers to configure and test their own lows. Powering Bluetooth IoT devices and demonstrating communication capabilities with mobile-end applications and cloud-based platforms, all without the need to use any development tools and RF-related coding knowledge.
Oslo, Norway – June 2, 2017 – Ultradic Semiconductor , the ultra-low-power (ULP) RF specialist, today announced the Nordic Thingy: 52 Development Kit, a versatile, compatible Bluetooth 5 “out of the box†low power consumption Bluetooth develops a board and can be configured through a mobile app or a cloud app.
Nordic Thingy: 52 Development Kit
Nordic Thingy: 52 enables application developers who do not have very specialized firmware coding knowledge or advanced development tools to quickly design and demonstrate Internet of Things (IoT) devices and their accompanying mobile device-side applications or Internet applications. Application designers can quickly and easily configure the development kit's embedded applications on the Bluetooth interface that comes with the mobile device.
This development kit is based on Nordic's nRF52832 low-power Bluetooth SoC, which integrates a 64MHz 32-bit ARM® Cortex® M4F microprocessor with 2.4GHz multi-protocol RF (supports Bluetooth 5, ANTTM and dedicated 2.4GHz RF software) And 512kB flash and 64kB RAM. The nRF52832 SoC runs Nordic's S132 protocol stack, which supports up to 20 simultaneous connections, and each connection can be configured for a different low-power Bluetooth role.
The Nordic Thingy: 52 printed circuit board is housed in a 6x6 cm plastic case with a USB port for charging the device's lithium-ion battery. Development kits include: built-in digital microphones and speakers; motion sensors (nine-axis, including accelerometers, gyroscopes, and magnetometers); ultra-low power wake-up accelerometers; and air pressure, temperature, humidity, air quality, and color sensors. Nordic Thingy: 52 comes with sample firmware and iOS and Android Bluetooth low energy connectivity applications. Nordic also offers other source code application software on GitHub.
Application developers can use Nordic Thingy: 52 to quickly develop IoT devices for a range of applications. Parameters such as the sampling rate of the air quality sensor can be easily modified by wireless commands from a smartphone or internet application, or the color sensor can be activated without interacting directly with the firmware code of Nordic Thingy:52. It's also easy to implement more complex IoT applications; for example, Nordic Thingy: 52 can be configured to change its LED color to respond to voice commands from a personal assistant plug-in such as Amazon's Alexa. The voice command triggers Alexa to contact the cloud platform, which instructs the inexpensive networking router to wirelessly forward this command to activate Nordic Thingy:52.
This development platform is also compatible with cloud platforms. For example, a Nordic Thingy: 52 that connects to a door can report a door open event to the cloud platform to send a text message to the smartphone. Alternatively, when the cloud-recorded homeowner's smartphone is near Nordic Thingy: 52, the Nordic Thingy: 52 can be ordered to activate a networked product, such as a Philips Hue smart light bulb.
Pär Håkansson, product marketing manager at Nordic Semiconductor, said: "Nordic Thingy: 52 is the ideal development kit for application developers to take full advantage of IoT potential. Because Nordic Thingy: 52 has simple wireless configurability for mobile devices or cloud platforms, applications Program developers do not need to understand the lengthy and complex process of firmware coding, debugging, and compilation using high-end development tools.
With a modest investment, application developers can start working with Nordic Thingy:52 right away, and they don't need any additional expertise other than application creation skills. In this way, the innovative new developer community can realize their imagination through this full-featured, high-end, low-power Bluetooth platform. â€
The Nordic Thingy: 52 development kit is now available through Nordic's distribution partners for $39.
